A Passage for Nature

Central America is known for its warm people and diverse cultures. At the same time the region boasts some of the world’s highest levels of biodiversity. Its pacific slope is especially unique; across short distances, landscapes transition from rich coastal-marine areas to distinctive tropical dry forests to lush moist forests and beneficial fresh-water lakes and wetlands.

Over 70% of Central American people live in communities within this western landscape. Although dense human populations cause fragmentation of ecosystems endangering plants and wildlife, the Central American people now represent potential solutions for future biodiversity conservation. For example, by restoring and connecting forests on private farms, landowners are helping the endangered Geoffroyi spider monkey recover. By managing traditional fisheries and carefully implementing coastal development, fishermen and developers will ensure that endangered sea turtles continue to successfully nest.

Paso Pacífico is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with a unique mission focused on a biologically and culturally rich geographical area. We invite you to learn more about our exciting movement to connect the people, wildlife and ecosystems of Central America!
