Through the support of this community-focused agency, we have launched a major coastal-marine conservation initiative entitled: Coastal-Marine Research Project - Ensuring the Scientific and Educational Foundations for the Protection and Management of Sea Turtles at the La Flor and Rio Escalante-Chacocente Wildlife Refuges.
This effort aims to improve our knowledge of sea turtles in their nesting and foraging habitat and sthrengthen the local capacity to study and protect these sea turtles. This project involves fishermen as decision-makers in marine habitat management and empowers coastal communities in taking meausres to protect sea turtle nests on solitary beaches. Thanks to DANIDA's financial support and the scientific expertise of its staff in Nicaragua, Paso Pacifico and the coastal communities of the Paso del Istmo are taking a big stride towards improved management and protection of marine life. Updates on the progress of this project, which began in July 2011, will be made availabe in the coming weeks via Project Profiles. |
