Junior Rangers

Our Junior Rangers program is building the next generation of biodiversity stewards in coastal Nicaragua. Given the strength and capacity of our Turtle Rangers, we decided it was time to capitalize on their leadership within the community. Children are the future of conservation in these communities, and as they learn how they can take action for the environment, they can become better stewards and citizens.

Our Environmental Education efforts began in 2006.  To compliment these efforts we launched our Junior Ranger program in February 2012 in the fishing village of Ostional.  Our Junior Rangers program includes the following components:

Rangers as Ambassadors
Rangers and Paso Pacifico enviornmental education staff conduct hands-on learning projects which allow kids to earn recognition and prizes.

Knowledge and Values
A series of questions and puzzles requiring nature observation and inquiry culminating in a service component allows kids to work toward their Junior Ranger title.

Pride and Leadership
At the launch of the 2012 sea turtle season in June, kids who have achieved Junior Ranger status will participate in a community celebration. Exceptional Junior Rangers will be invited to work alongside our Turtle Rangers during nesting season.

Thanks to Paso Pacifico Board Chairman Emeritus Rick Smith we're transforming children's understanding of coastal and marine ecology, and building local pride in natural resource protection.
